OVERVIEW: Andrographis paniculata is a plant that has been effectively used in traditional Asian medicines for centuries. Its perceived “blood purifying” property results in its use in diseases where blood “abnormalities” are considered causes of disease.


INTRODUCTION: Erect annual herb, 0.4- 1m.High. Stems quadrangular, much-branched. Leaves opposite, short-petioled, oblong-attenuate at both ends, glabrous, pale beneath. Inflorescence is axillary and terminal raceme or panicle; flowers white with pink spots. Capsule linear–oblong, acute at both ends, pubescent. Seeds numerous, oblong, glabrous.


PHYTOCONSTITUENTS: The plant contains bitter glucosides: andrographolide, neondrographolide, panaculoside, flavonoids, andrographin, panicalin, apigeinin 7-4-dimethyl ether.
