OVERVIEW: The roots, stems, leaves, seed pods, resin and flowers are considered to be healing herbs in Ayurvedic (traditional Indian healing system) and Unani (traditional Middle Eastern healing system) folk medicine.

INTRODUCTION: The latin name of the miracle tree is Moringa Oleifera. It is a tree native to India and cultivated in all sub-tropical areas. This tropical multipurpose tree, resistant to drought, is fast growing. Moringa could become one of the world’s most valuable plants, at least in humanitarian terms, but also for commercial purposes. Moringa promotes environmentally sound economic development. A small or medium sized tree, about 10 m high. Leaves usually 3-pinnate, leaflets 1.2-1.8 cm long, the lateral elliptic, the terminal obovate and slightly longer than the lateral ones. Flowers white, fragrant, in large panicles. Pods pendulous, greenish, triangular, ribbed. Seeds trigonous, the angled winged.

PHYTOCONSTITUENTS: The plant contains 4-hydroxymellein, vanillin, moringine, moringinine, bayrenol, indole acetic acid, indole acetonitrile, benzylisothiocyanate, pterygospermin, cartotene, known flavanoids, polysaccharide, protein components, various essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins, fatty acids and spirochin.

The plant contains vitamin C, which fights a host of illnesses including colds and flu; vitamin A, which acts as a shield against eye disease, skin disease, heart ailments, diarrhea, and many other diseases; Calcium, which builds strong bones and teeth and helps prevent osteoporosis; Potassium, which is essential for the functioning of the brain and nerves, and Proteins, the basic building blocks of all our body cells. Another important point is that Moringa leaves contain all of the essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. It is very rare for a vegetable to contain all of these amino acids and Moringa contains these amino acids in a good proportion, so that they are very useful to our bodies. Moringa leaves could be a great boon to people who do not get protein from meat. Moringa even contains argenine and histidine two amino acids especially important for infants. Argenine and histidine, are especially important for infants who are unable to make enough protein for their growth requirements.
